RG Standards Coax Cable

A series of standard types of coaxial cable were specified for military uses, in the formRG-#orRG-#/U”. They date from World War 2 and were listed in MIL-HDBK-216 published in 1962. These designations are now obsolete.

The RG designation stands for Radio Guide; the U designation stands for Universal.

The current military standard is MIL-SPEC MIL-C-17. MIL-C-17 numbers, such asM17/75-RG214”, are given for military cables and manufacturer’s catalogue numbers for civilian applications. However, the RG-series designations were so common for generations that they are still used, although critical users should be aware that since the handbook is withdrawn there is no standard to guarantee the electrical and physical characteristics of a cable described asRG-# type”. The RG designators are mostly used to identify compatible connectors that fit the inner conductor, dielectric, and jacket dimensions of the old RG-series cables.

It is important to choose the correct RG style cable for your requirements, but also to look carefully at the specifications to confirm the performance of the cable from a particular manufacturer meets the requirements of your particular application.

  • RG58 coaxial cable
RG58 coaxial cable is a commonly used type of coaxial cables known for its flexibility and versatility. It is widely used in applications that require the transmission of high-frequency signals, such as computer networks, radio communication, and video surveillance systems. RG58 cable is designed with a smaller diameter and thinner insulation, making it highly flexible and easy to work with in tight spaces. Its impedance is typically 50 ohms, which is suitable for most RF applications. RG58 cable offers decent signal transmission performance over relatively short distances, making it ideal for applications within a localized area. It provides good shielding against signal interference and has a reasonable power handling capacity. While it may not be suitable for long-distance transmissions or high-power applications, RG58 cable is an affordable and practical choice for many common communication needs.
  • RG174 coaxial cable
RG174 coaxial cable is a small and flexible type of coaxial cable commonly used in applications that require high-frequency signal transmission. It is popularly used in GPS systems, wireless communication devices, and RF equipment. With its compact size, RG174 cable is suitable for installations where space is limited. It has an impedance of 50 ohms, ensuring good signal transmission over short distances. RG174 cable also offers excellent shielding capabilities, protecting against signal interference and minimizing signal loss. Overall, it is a versatile and reliable choice for wireless communication and RF applications.
  • RG316 coaxial cable
RG316 coaxial cable is a versatile and flexible type of coaxial cable commonly used in applications that require high-frequency signal transmission in a compact form factor. It is often utilized in applications such as wireless communication systems, GPS receivers, and test and measurement equipment. With its small size and flexibility, RG316 cable is easy to install and route, making it suitable for applications where space is limited. It has an impedance of 50 ohms, which is compatible with most RF systems. Despite its compact size, RG316 cable offers good signal transmission performance and low signal loss over short distances. It also provides decent shielding against signal interference, ensuring reliable data transmission. In summary, RG316 coaxial cable is a flexible and efficient choice for high-frequency applications that require compactness and reliable signal transmission.
  • RG400 coaxial cable
RG400 coaxial cable is a high-quality and high-performance type of coaxial cable commonly used in applications that require precise and reliable signal transmission. It is widely utilized in aerospace, military, and telecommunications industries. RG400 cable is known for its low signal loss and excellent signal integrity, making it suitable for high-frequency applications. It has an impedance of 50 ohms, which is compatible with most RF systems. RG400 cable offers superior shielding capabilities, effectively protecting against signal interference and ensuring clear and accurate signal transmission. Its durable construction and high-quality materials make it resistant to environmental factors and mechanical stress. In summary, RG400 coaxial cable is a top choice for applications that demand precise and reliable signal transmission, such as aerospace, military, and telecommunications.
